Inside Out Ep.39: COVID and the Rural Church

COVID-19 has changed the Church.

“There’s no question that the Church is different,” says Dr. Glenn Daman, my guest on this Inside Out podcast. “Our country’s different. The world post-COVID is going to be different.”

Fewer people are returning to church after the 2020 shutdowns. And there’s tension as people express their differing political views of the pandemic.

But Daman, an author, pastor, adjunct professor, and a former director of Village Missions’ Center for Leadership Development, is confident that rural churches will find their way forward. That will happen when they discover what their communities need now.

“The question that I think that we need to be asking, first and foremost, is not ‘How do we go back to doing what we did,’ but now looking at it and saying, ‘What do we need to do to be effective in our ministry and in our community?’”

The inherent strengths of rural churches and rural communities make them ready for the challenge.

“Rural people are very resilient,” Daman says. “So I think there’s just some opportunities for real growth in the church to kind of say, ‘Okay, we need to all band together to rebuild our ministry, and really strengthen the church.’”
