Gender, Sports, the First Amendment – Faith Under Fire – 3/21/24

Gender, Sports, the First Amendment – Faith Under Fire – 3/21/24

Gender, Sports, Parental Rights, and the First Amendment – “Faith Under Fire”

A small Christian school has sued its state sports association, after the Vermont Principals Association evicted the school’s teams  from the group. The Mid Vermont Christian School’s girls basketball team forfeited a state tournament game, rather than play an opposing team which included a 6-foot tall player who was born male.

Attorney Jake Reed says the forfeit which ended a successful sports season was a sharp punishment in and of itself, but the statewide group retaliated by forbidding that school from all participation in any other sport (and academic competitions) sponsored by the association. Mid Vermont is also out of a state tuition program, taking away advantages for students and families.

This brought a First-Amendment lawsuit, and the next hearing in the case happens in April. Greg Gillispie asked Reed about matters or parental rights and recent trends on how courts have been ruling in transgender cases and allegations of bias against people of faith.

Jacob Reed is an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom, a legal organization which takes on cases related to religious freedom, marriage and family, free speech and the sanctity of life. His emphasis with ADF often centers on schools, students and educational matters.

Details of this specific case can be found here and here.

An Interactive Good Friday Experience – Hometown Heroes – 3/19/24

A Tonawanda Church invites the surrounding communities to experience first-hand what Jesus experienced on the original Good Friday.

Their interactive Good Friday experience takes place on Good Friday, March 29. Guests can drop in for as long or as little as they like, anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. First Trinity Lutheran Church is at 1570 Niagara Falls Boulevard in the northern Buffalo suburb.

Carolyn Doster is one of the coordinators. She tells our “Hometown Heroes” interviewer Mark Webster about what families and individuals will discover as they “Journey Through Good Friday”. The Biblical story comes alive with an all-five-senses self-paced visit. It is family friendly, plus has advice for parents of very young children about two of the 16 scenes which may be too stark or need parental context. The First Trinity website offers a preview (plus information for people who are unable to attend in person).

Rural Cancer Screening – Hometown Heroes – 3/12/24

Rural Cancer Screening – Hometown Heroes – 3/12/24

Hometown Heroes” from Family Life

Hannah Farley does outreach to encourage people who are 45 and older to get checked for early signs of cancer.

In this Family Life News interview, she says some residents of rural areas have a bias which prevents them from wanting to get cancer screening.  Farley finds though that it is productive to reinterpret the question as a “stewardship of your body” and to encourage you to ponder how the people around you rely on your presence — “you are a gift to your family”.

In this week’s edition of “Hometown Heroes”, you will hear about success stories through this program across its three decades. The CSP team can help individuals get screened, even if they don’t have current health insurance or feel there are other barriers.

Farley is the Community Outreach Manager for the Cancer Screening Program in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

Issues in Education – 3/18/24

Education spending is a huge “chunk of change” in the 233 billion dollar New York State budget. That amount is in addition to all the local and county funds which pour into school district coffers.

The founder of the Teaching and Learning Institute says local school districts statewide need to prepare themselves for some fiscal belt-tightening in the very near future. Dr. Ralph Kerr explains why, in this Family Life News podcast.

Also on this week’s “Issues in Education“:

  • New York residents vote on their local school budgets on May 21.
  • That same time, they’ll also elect new or returning members of the school board.
  • School board candidates have until April 22 to submit their nominating petitions.
  • Students, parents and colleges continue to be “on edge” over an historic delay in financial aid forms, the FAFSA process used by most of higher education. (Dr. Kerr says the delay is not the fault of the universities.)
