Hurricane Relief – from the Northeast to the Southeast – 10/02/24

Concerned and compassionate listeners across Pennsylvania and New York want to help with the immediate human needs of many many thousands across six states ravaged by the winds and rain of Hurricane Helene.

In this special report from Family Life’s Sarah Harnisch, you can hear some of the sounds and descriptions of the destruction through some many communities in the southeast U.S. — from larger metro areas, to small towns and cities, to rural areas and mountainside hamlets.

You also will hear the story of one local religious group which is doing something tangible: filling a large trailer with water, food and other supplies. It will be delivered this weekend to western North Carolina, where some of the most widespread damage has happened.

Susan Weaver is coordinating this project for the Riverside Chapel in Salamanca, New York. Hear about her sense of God’s calling to take tangible action for people in deep need.

Separately, Family Life News received information on this other angle of this major ongoing story:

Watch out for scam charity appeals on your phone, computer and other devices

Law enforcement authorities are cautioning people to watch out for telephone and online scams, pretending to seek donations to help in hurricane recovery efforts across the southeastern U.S.

Their advice: If someone calls you — or sends a social media post, text or email — don’t reply right away, and don’t give-up your bank account or credit card numbers. Consumer advocates recommend that you initiate any donation you want to make. Do so through an established organization or your own local church.

Into that crisis, Christian broadcaster John Owens and his on-air team brought vital and accurate information to people stranded without electricity and safe roads. His radio ministry also continues to bring Gospel hope to a wide swath of the hurricane zone.

Family Life’s Greg Gillispie asked Owens for his first-person on-the-scene stories of what people in that region saw — and what they need next. This is an extended interview with the Family Life Radio Network alum to now manages Blue Ridge Broadcasting in Asheville, North Carolina. (The information shared was up to date as of 9/30/2024.)

This is Part 1 of our extended interview with John Owens. The second half is also available for you to hear, download or share.

Youth Ministry -What is most effective in the 21st Century?

Inspiration for Congregations

Patterns of congregational youth ministry which were emphasized 20 and 30 years ago are not as effective these days to engage with teens, children and young adults now. Research has shown what church leaders and volunteers ought to emphasize now. The measurement they used:  what was distinctive in churches where students were still active in a congregation five to ten years later, long after they “graduated” from youth ministry.

The Rev. Mark Kiessling is director for the national Youth Ministry Office of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. He tells Family Life News that ministry with young people which are geared mostly toward events and programs are not having the same impact with the current young generation. What is especially strong to influence

He says many smaller and midsized churches fret over not having much of a traditional “youth program”, if they even have one at all. However, smaller congregations actually have an advantage they can leverage: they are already good at relationships and personal connections.
