Hurricane Helene – Part 2 with NC Christian Broadcaster John Owens

https://baptistsonmission.org Hurricane-Helene

John Owens, an alum of the Family Life Ministries radio staff, now leads the Christian broadcasting outreach of the Billy Graham Evangelical Association, sending radio broadcasts into a wide area of the region devastated by Hurricane Helene.

When our Greg Gillispie spoke with him a week ago — just days after the monsoon-like rains washed away buildings, roads and even entire communities — he said it is a challenge to get accurate information. In this second half of that interview, the lack of communication and the uncertainty of some social media posts and official announcements made it hard to find trustworthy news and lifesaving information.

That dilemma faced by his radio staff in the immediate aftermath, and by people throughout the multi-state hurricane damage zone since then, has become a forerunner of this week’s back-and-forth on who is giving accurate information, from state and Federal agencies, to local emergency managers, to eyewitnesses watching their real-world situations and hoping for help.

This podcast includes John Owen’s observations and first-person stories from western North Carolina:

  • The challenges of getting and confirming information when cell towers and internet service are out, roads and bridges have disappeared, and entire mountain communities are isolated
  • The ways help arrived, from packs of donkeys to private helicopters
  • The value of radio as a primary information source in such emergencies
  • The value of Christian broadcasting in particular, to bring hope and reliable information to people with true human needs — practical, physical and spiritual.

Hurricane Relief – from the Northeast to the Southeast – 10/02/24

Concerned and compassionate listeners across Pennsylvania and New York want to help with the immediate human needs of many many thousands across six states ravaged by the winds and rain of Hurricane Helene.

In this special report from Family Life’s Sarah Harnisch, you can hear some of the sounds and descriptions of the destruction through some many communities in the southeast U.S. — from larger metro areas, to small towns and cities, to rural areas and mountainside hamlets.

You also will hear the story of one local religious group which is doing something tangible: filling a large trailer with water, food and other supplies. It will be delivered this weekend to western North Carolina, where some of the most widespread damage has happened.

Susan Weaver is coordinating this project for the Riverside Chapel in Salamanca, New York. Hear about her sense of God’s calling to take tangible action for people in deep need.

Separately, Family Life News received information on this other angle of this major ongoing story:

Watch out for scam charity appeals on your phone, computer and other devices

Law enforcement authorities are cautioning people to watch out for telephone and online scams, pretending to seek donations to help in hurricane recovery efforts across the southeastern U.S.

Their advice: If someone calls you — or sends a social media post, text or email — don’t reply right away, and don’t give-up your bank account or credit card numbers. Consumer advocates recommend that you initiate any donation you want to make. Do so through an established organization or your own local church.

035: Ten Minutes With…Wes Hampton from Gaither Vocal Band

035: Ten Minutes With…Wes Hampton from Gaither Vocal Band

Wesley Adam Hampton was born December 8, 1977, in Memphis, Tennessee. While he was a college student at Trevecca in Nashville, Wes invited Andrea Means to attend a Gaither Homecoming concert for their first official date. After two years at Trevecca, Wes and Andrea were married and moved to Birmingham, Alabama, to complete their education. Wes graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama, then worked as a minister of worship for The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham for two years before getting a phone call from Bill Gaither that would change his life nearly overnight. Wes joined the Vocal Band in July 2005 as the group’s tenor. His transition into the Vocal Band was virtually seamless, since he already knew the parts to nearly every song in the GVB’s repertoire. And since that time, Wes has done far more than sing a part. He has joined the ranks of an exclusive handful of world class singers who have sung tenor for the Gaither Vocal Band over the years.
