Staycation – Drake Well Museum & Park – Titusville – 8/16/24

Staycation – Drake Well Museum & Park – Titusville – 8/16/24

It’s “Staycation Destinations” on Family Life

The last week of August marks the anniversary of a milestone that transformed northwest Pennsylvania — and transformed the world.

It was 1859, when “Colonel” Edwin Drake struck oil at his new well south of Titusville. As he and his team developed the infrastructure to drill, store and transport oil, the petroleum industry mushroomed. So did “oil boom” towns throughout the region.

The Drake Well Museum & Park is at the site of that first well. It tells the story of this discovery which directly led to huge changes in the local economy, the world of transportation and so much more.

Executive Director Emily Weaver tells us about this history and about what modern-day visitors to the site can see at the Drake Well.

https://www.titusvillenewsjournal.com/news/friends-of-drake-well-incVisitor information about the museum and grounds are available at www.DrakeWell.org. There you can find for about the exhibits, history and upcoming events.

We also have separate podcast-only bonus content, as Emily Weaver gives us a radio tour of a town which went from almost nothing to a population of 15,000 — back to almost nothing. The Friends of Drake Well historical organization has a twin attraction about 20 miles further south:  Pithole City.

This extended interview has that story, and information about what visitors can see there too. The biggest annual event there happens in mid-Autumn, the Pithole Lantern Tour.

Staycation Bonus Content – Drake Well & Pithole City – 8/16/24

Staycation Bonus Content – Drake Well & Pithole City – 8/16/24

This week’s “Staycation Destinations” feature took you on a radio tour of Edwin Drake’s Well #1. It essentially became the birthplace of the modern petroleum industry.

The Drake Well Museum and Park, with its indoor and outdoor exhibits, tells of this history.

In this additional interview segment, Emily Weaver of the Friends of Drake Well Incorporated makes about 20 miles further south of Titusville, to another historic site in the Oil Creek Region.

In the 1860s, Pithole City sprung up and grew to a population of 15,000 as people flooded in there, in an oil-focused version of a gold rush.

Weaver tells us more of that story, and describes what people can see at the Pithole visitors center (open seasonally on weekend).

Pithole City is operated as a tourist site in conjunction with the Drake Well Museum.

Prolife Pregnancy Centers vs the New York Attorney General – 8/15/24

Prolife Pregnancy Centers vs the New York Attorney General – 8/15/24

…. A MAJOR HEARING ABOUT “ABORTION PILL REVERSAL” …. IN BUFFALO THIS THURSDAY…..

A number of pro-life organizations are suing New York’s Attorney General. They argue that threats of legal actions by Letitia James and her office will seek to unconstitutionally silence their advice to clients who start on Mifepristone to chemically end a pregnancy, but then have second thoughts. The state sent letters to the pregnancy care center, threatening prosecution if they provide information about abortion-drug reversal processes to people who visit their clinics.

The Alliance Defending Freedom law group represents those centers and sought an injunction against the Attorney General. That hearing was today (August 15, 2024). Prior to this court hearing, Family Life news producer Greg Gillispie got a preview from ADF attorney Gabriella McIntyre.

The ADF statement about the case is here from their website ADFLegal.org.

Family Life News also reached out to the Attorney General’s media team, offering to interview James or her spokesperson.

This podcast post will be updated when we have their response.

City On The Hill – Part Two – Today’s young Christian and cultural leaders – 8/12/24

City On The Hill – Part Two – Today’s young Christian and cultural leaders – 8/12/24

The next generation of young leaders — or, perhaps said more accurately, the incoming generation of young leaders — gets leadership development and hands-on training from the annual summer project called City On The Hill. The Pennsylvania Family Institute brought together 57 high school and college students for worship, workshops and a simulation of a state senate session with debates and legislative proposals.

This podcast features Part Two of our conversation with two of those participants, Jacob Reece and Amiya Montijo.

In Part One, we focused on the activities of that week of Biblical worldview and leadership development. [ It aired 8/01/2024 on Family Life. Listen to, share or download it here. ]

In this new interview, Greg Gillispie asks these guests about what is true for young people who have grown up in today’s culture. They offer their personal perspectives of hope, reassurance and commitment, coming from today’s Christian young adults.

Jacob Reece is a pre-law student from Blandon, PA. He also interned this summer with PFI.  Amiya Montijo is a 2024 high school graduate. She has attended COTH across multiple summers.

Information about the 2025 City On The Hill — the 25th anniversary — is available on their website.
