Proposition One – Will New Yorkers add new rights to the State Constitution? – 10/08/24

Empire State legislators have asked New York’s voters to amend the State Constitution.

With a title of the “Equal Rights Amendment” it is getting broad support as a means to lock in abortion as a protected activity. However many pro-family advocates across the political spectrum are now expressing concern about how Proposal One’s wording could open the door to transgender procedures with no parental notification, endangers women’s sports, and could add voting rights for non-citizens. Western New York State Senator George Borrello also tells us that, if this is approved by a majority this fall, it will create big business for attorneys who will file many more lawsuits related to the new Constitutional protections.

Borrello is among the organizers for a public information forum on Prop One. That public meeting was Tuesday (October 8) in Corning, New York. He spoke Wednesday morning about the issues with Bob Price of Family Life News.

Pretty Place – A Giant Cross towers over three hurricane-ravaged states

A faith-centered story from Family Life News

Pretty Place is a renown open-air church at Cleveland, South Carolina. It was built in 1941. It has created memories for generations of visitors.

Last week, the devastating 60-70 mph winds in the remnants of Hurricane Helene hit that area.

Although much of the outdoor chapel suffered major damage in last week’s massive storm, the camp’s giant cross is still standing. Photos have gone viral, bringing hope to the region.

Family Life newscaster Sarah Harnish interviewed the president and CEO of Greenville’s YMCA, Sam Franklin. Listen to the full conversation in the podcast player here.

A NY Pro-Life Group questions Planned Parenthood’s financial publicity

Family Life’s weekly “Faith Under Fire” feature

When Planned Parenthood announced it would be, at least temporarily, curtailing some abortion procedures at several New York clinics, an Empire State pro-life organization raised questions about Planned Parenthood’s publicity last month.

Feminists Choosing Life of New York released statements that asked how the largest provider of abortions in New York State and in the nation can be on financial hard times. Spokesperson Sarah Prentice told Family Life News that two significant dynamics are happening. First, well over have of the pregnancies that are ended through abortions are now happening with a cocktail of two pills, including mifepristone which ends the life of the fetus. Also, even as revenue from in-clinic procedures are less frequent, Planned Parenthood still gets hundreds of millions in taxpayer subsidies.

In this podcast, Prentice quotes the New York governor’s annual budget, showing how much tax money goes to funding abortions, encouraging people from other states to come to New York in so-called “abortion tourism”, and to pay for extensive lobbying on Planned Parenthood’s behalf.

Sarah Prentice is policy analyst and deputy outreach manager for FCLNY, which describes itself as a statewide human rights coalition, active on a range of issues. More information is available on their Instagram, website, and video.

Family Life News has invited Planned Parenthood of New York to have a parallel interview, to hear their perspective their public announcement and the related issues raised in this interview. As of the time of this post, we have not heard a response.

Hurricane Relief – from the Northeast to the Southeast – 10/02/24

Concerned and compassionate listeners across Pennsylvania and New York want to help with the immediate human needs of many many thousands across six states ravaged by the winds and rain of Hurricane Helene.

In this special report from Family Life’s Sarah Harnisch, you can hear some of the sounds and descriptions of the destruction through some many communities in the southeast U.S. — from larger metro areas, to small towns and cities, to rural areas and mountainside hamlets.

You also will hear the story of one local religious group which is doing something tangible: filling a large trailer with water, food and other supplies. It will be delivered this weekend to western North Carolina, where some of the most widespread damage has happened.

Susan Weaver is coordinating this project for the Riverside Chapel in Salamanca, New York. Hear about her sense of God’s calling to take tangible action for people in deep need.

Separately, Family Life News received information on this other angle of this major ongoing story:

Watch out for scam charity appeals on your phone, computer and other devices

Law enforcement authorities are cautioning people to watch out for telephone and online scams, pretending to seek donations to help in hurricane recovery efforts across the southeastern U.S.

Their advice: If someone calls you — or sends a social media post, text or email — don’t reply right away, and don’t give-up your bank account or credit card numbers. Consumer advocates recommend that you initiate any donation you want to make. Do so through an established organization or your own local church.
