Into that crisis, Christian broadcaster John Owens and his on-air team brought vital and accurate information to people stranded without electricity and safe roads. His radio ministry also continues to bring Gospel hope to a wide swath of the hurricane zone.

Family Life’s Greg Gillispie asked Owens for his first-person on-the-scene stories of what people in that region saw — and what they need next. This is an extended interview with the Family Life Radio Network alum to now manages Blue Ridge Broadcasting in Asheville, North Carolina. (The information shared was up to date as of 9/30/2024.)

This is Part 1 of our extended interview with John Owens. The second half is also available for you to hear, download or share.

Capital Connection – Today’s PA & NY Issues

It’s our weekly Family Life News cultural/political/social roundtable, for the week of 9/27/2024

It’s “Capital Connection”, the Friday news feature from Family Life News.  Noon Report anchor Bob Price guides our ten-minute conversation, digging into the issues in our two states — and far beyond.

Christian advocates Jason McGuire and Michael Gere have commentary from the two capital cities on these major issues in the news:

  • NY’s regents pause consideration on policies for transgender inclusion in girls scholastic sports, but will such rules be back after the election?
  • Do voters realize that Proposition One may enshrine such gender diversity in the New York Constitution? What will the “Equal Rights Amendment” do to women’s rights, parental rights, and parental notifications about counseling and medical treatments for their children?
  • Thousands gathered in Harrisburg this week. What is happening in the battle over abortion regulations?
  • What do our watchdogs see as trends in legislative priorities this fall, swings in the 2024 election, and voters’ confidence in how the ballots are distributed and counted?

Our guests on most editions of “Capital Connection” are Jason McGuire, the executive director of the New York Families Foundation and New York Families Action, and Michael Geer, the president of the Pennsylvania Family Institute.

Navigating Election Season

The “Inside Out” Podcast from Family Life News

How can Christians show Jesus’ radical love in the social, religious, and political climate? Martha’s guest Jeff Jones reminds Christians that our primary allegiance is to King Jesus, and He’s not up for reelection. Jones is lead pastor of Chase Oaks Church in Dallas, Texas, and coauthor with Mike Hogan of the book Rebranding Christianity.

How can Christians show Jesus’ radical love as we approach the November election? “Really, it’s an incredible opportunity to be distinctive,” says Jeff Jones. “Not to take our cues from the world that is very polarized and angry and there’s a lot of misplaced hope and vitriol.”

Jones is the lead pastor of Chase Oaks Church in Dallas, Texas, and coauthor with Mike Hogan of the book Rebranding Christianity. He points out that a believer’s model is Jesus, and He reached out to those who disagreed with Him. “As Christians we get to show a better way. In fact, it’s not just that we get to, we’re commanded to. We’re Jesus-followers, and so we take our cue from Jesus and how did He relate to the world, how did He relate to people who disagreed?” he says. “If we can just shift from sort of culture war mentality to mission field mentality–that’s a major shift–but it’s shifting from fear dominating us to love dominating us. What would it look like to relate like Jesus, who moved toward people in love, especially those who disagreed with him?”

And it’s especially meaningful to remember Jesus’ prayer for unity among believers, recorded in the Gospel of John.

“In a divided world, to see a united church where we can remember ‘hey that’s what we agree on–and that’s Jesus and His mission and His truth, and our hope is in Him,’” Jones says. “And what an opportunity to do that this fall and really stand out as believers, if we’re willing to do that.”

Recognizing our primary loyalty can help Christians avoid getting tangled in partisan rhetoric. “Our allegiance is to King Jesus, which is above all this other stuff. And our hope is in Him,” Jones says. “We await a Savior from there, not here. Our hope, our focus–all of that—as we go into these elections: let’s remember who we are, and where our hope is. And then we don’t have to be afraid. Because it really doesn’t matter who gets in or who doesn’t get in. King Jesus is not up for reelection.”

Learn about Jeff Jones and the book he’s coauthored, Rebranding Christianity. He contends that the Christian “brand” is losing relevance and influence in the U.S.  A key reason is that Christians, who represent the brand to the world, fail to display what Jesus wants us to be known for — radical love. Jones says the next five to ten years will either deepen the decline or witness a movement to become more of who Jesus called us to be.

Issues in Education – Regional Consolidation, Politics in the Classroom, more – 9/23/24

Issues in Education” is a Monday News Feature from Family Life.

This episode includes commentary from former superintendent and current educational strategist Ralph Kerr on significant issues facing families, teachers, school boards and communities:

  • Beyond Civics courses, what roles do schools play in shaping discussions of campaigns and candidates? How should parents monitor election conversations which may happen at schools?
  • New York State education leaders are surveying every public school district, asking how they are serving their students. One outcome might be recommendations for “regionalization” in many places — cooperation between schools, and perhaps more consolidations of elementaries, high schools, or even entire districts. Population shifts and budget imbalances are a big reason why.
  • The State Board of Regents (which oversees most of the education in New York) removed from this month’s agenda a proposed rule which would have mandated that students could cross gender lines for sports, in high schools, middle schools and elementary programs.

Dr. Kerr offers his vantage point on these Issues in Education.
