Issues in Education – 3/18/24

Education spending is a huge “chunk of change” in the 233 billion dollar New York State budget. That amount is in addition to all the local and county funds which pour into school district coffers.

The founder of the Teaching and Learning Institute says local school districts statewide need to prepare themselves for some fiscal belt-tightening in the very near future. Dr. Ralph Kerr explains why, in this Family Life News podcast.

Also on this week’s “Issues in Education“:

  • New York residents vote on their local school budgets on May 21.
  • That same time, they’ll also elect new or returning members of the school board.
  • School board candidates have until April 22 to submit their nominating petitions.
  • Students, parents and colleges continue to be “on edge” over an historic delay in financial aid forms, the FAFSA process used by most of higher education. (Dr. Kerr says the delay is not the fault of the universities.)

It’s Parent-Teacher Conferences time. How can parents and guardians make these meetings most effective and helpful for students. Former school administrator and now education watchdog Ralph Kerr gives his insights and advise on this edition of our Monday news feature “Issues in Education”. There are several questions which are particularly fruitful for this mid-semester check-in.

Also this week, Dr. Kerr talks about interactions parents and other constituents can have with their local school board, plus an update on standardized test scores.

Dr. Ralph Kerr with the “Teaching and Learning Institute”. TLI describes its mission as the emphasis to get Christians involved in their local public schools and become candidates for school board. The institute studied a recent election where fully half of 139 western New York school districts only had one candidate running for each of the open seats.

Family Life Interview – Election Integrity – 08/30/23

Family Life Interview – Election Integrity – 08/30/23

A Christian law firm is suing the state of California for violating its own election laws. At issue is the inability to track whether mail-in ballots are actually cast by the voters who are legally allowed to cast a ballot.

Mariah Gondeiro is an attorney with Advocates for Faith and Freedom, which has already won one judgment from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. After a California judge ruled that the citizens group The Election Integrity Project was submitting simple “garden variety” voting irregularities, their lawyers have again appealed to the Ninth Circuit. The Election Integrity Project claims to have well over 1,000 signed affidavits proving violation of vote-counting laws over the past ten years in California alone.

Gondeiro gives Family Life News the concerns the Project has over ballot handling, an update on the lawsuit, and her take on why people in every state should be active in the push for election integrity.

The Election Integrity Project has now trained 20,000 Californians to be official poll watchers for 2024.
