Hometown Heroes – Christian mission in Central America

(and a bonus Love Story!)

Peter and Tyanne Jurka are Mark Webster’s guests on this week’s “Hometown Heroes” feature. The Jurkas are longtime Christian mission workers, serving in Central America. She is from western Pennsylvania, and he grew up in western New York. Their children and grandchildren are also part of their ongoing ministry.

Their story — in their personal lives and the ways they have served people in international mission — are fascinating and heartwarming.

A video highlighting the results of their life-enhancing work is available from StorehouseMission.org.

Hurricane Relief – from the Northeast to the Southeast – 10/02/24

Hurricane Relief – from the Northeast to the Southeast – 10/02/24

Concerned and compassionate listeners across Pennsylvania and New York want to help with the immediate human needs of many many thousands across six states ravaged by the winds and rain of Hurricane Helene.

In this special report from Family Life’s Sarah Harnisch, you can hear some of the sounds and descriptions of the destruction through some many communities in the southeast U.S. — from larger metro areas, to small towns and cities, to rural areas and mountainside hamlets.

You also will hear the story of one local religious group which is doing something tangible: filling a large trailer with water, food and other supplies. It will be delivered this weekend to western North Carolina, where some of the most widespread damage has happened.

Susan Weaver is coordinating this project for the Riverside Chapel in Salamanca, New York. Hear about her sense of God’s calling to take tangible action for people in deep need.

Separately, Family Life News received information on this other angle of this major ongoing story:

Watch out for scam charity appeals on your phone, computer and other devices

Law enforcement authorities are cautioning people to watch out for telephone and online scams, pretending to seek donations to help in hurricane recovery efforts across the southeastern U.S.

Their advice: If someone calls you — or sends a social media post, text or email — don’t reply right away, and don’t give-up your bank account or credit card numbers. Consumer advocates recommend that you initiate any donation you want to make. Do so through an established organization or your own local church.

Eight Days of Hope – Quick response to tornadoes – 5/07/24

Eight Days of Hope – Quick response to tornadoes – 5/07/24

“God has given us the opportunity to love and serve the brokenhearted.”

The “Eight Days of Hope” ministry is on the scene where tornadoes created multiple disaster zones in the past couple of weeks.

New-York-based Steve Tybor gives us an update on how the volunteers and equip get mobilized, to respond to the tangible needs while also bringing Christian hope.

Tybor tells Family Life’s Mark Webster about the midwestern response, their efforts to shelter young women caught up in human trafficking, and the upcoming annual trip to Buffalo for a week-plus of work in neighborhoods in need. This is the fifth year for the Buffalo projects — in the previous four, they have rehabbed homes of 1,200 families. Individuals, couples and families can participate in that work, even for fewer than eight days.

The national “Eight Days” effort has involved 60,000 volunteers.

Hometown Heroes – Dan Sorber in Cuba – 3/05/24

Hometown Heroes – Dan Sorber in Cuba – 3/05/24

Syracuse-based missionary Dan Sorber just left for Cuba.

Before his departure, he talked with Family Life News about faith, Christian freedom, and today’s realities in a Communist nation.

Sorber sees the changes that have opened up across his 15 previous visits to Cuba. When government officials and the general population face desperation and economic disaster, those hardships actually open up more evangelistic opportunities. He tells us that real revival is underway there, in ways he has not seen in any other place.

Sorber and his team see one of their most urgent priorities for each of their mission visits is to support and encourage the local Cuban pastors.

Click the podcast player to discover more about what Christians in Cuba face every day, and about how Americans can pray for and support the Cuban people who do and who don’t consider themselves people of faith.

For more about Dan Sorber’s involvement in Christian evangelization in Cuba, go to the Mission Landing Cuba website or watch this video from his church, The Gathering Place in Syracuse.
