“Issues in Education”

Retired school principal and superintendent Ralph Kerr joins us for the Monday Family Life News Feature “Issues in Education”.

This week:

  • Teacher shortages, already significant, are magnified by the number of immigrant children who entered the U.S. in recent years
  • School districts are hamstrung by the multiple languages spoken by their young newcomers, many of whom are not (yet) proficient in English
  • Whether public schools and parochial schools should compete together or have separate leagues and championships — That debate is renewed again
  • How will public schools be affected, depending on whether a majority of New York voters approve or vote against Proposition One on this fall’s ballots

Dr. Ralph Kerr founded the Teaching and Learning Institute, based in Houghton, NY.  TLI has its mission to influence Pennsylvania’s and New York’s public schools with increased involvement by people traditional family values and Judeo-Christian beliefs.

Choices toward planning for college – 2/15/24

Choices toward planning for college – 2/15/24

This is the time of year when many college-bound students are finalizing applications for which school they intend to go to in the fall.

Also at issue: how to pay for higher education, whether that is for incoming first-year students or those who are already at a college or university.

For advice on the decision-making processes, we sought the perspective of President Wayne Lewis of Houghton University in Houghton, New York. In this Family Life Interview, you will hear:

  • How the federal delays in this year’s one-application for financial aid computations (the online FAFSA form) has affected students, families and the schools — and best “next steps to take”
  • Timelines for applying to your preferred school(s), when financial aid determinations are made, and when someone can change their mind about which college to attend
  • How current students are great resources for sorting out where a new student can attend a place which fits them — whether they are liberal or conservative or moderate, whether they are Christian or not
  • The difference being colleges which teach their students “to think” versus places which teach students “what to think”

The Shape of Campus Ministry Today

Steve Cheyney tells us about the current priorities of most campus ministries, because of changes in the priorities of most college students of the current generation, often referred to as Generation Z.

Cheyney calls the mental health circumstances of many of these young adults a current “crisis”. The causes, he says, are related to the ways students relate to each other and to other people, mostly via their devices. They want to impact society, improve the world, and find themselves often unable to connect.

That shapes ministry to college students, with a focus on counseling and pastoral care. That also means that campus ministries — and local congregations near a university campus — will miss the boat if they focus on traditional Bible studies, Sunday morning worship, or other “religious” events. The veteran of more than two decades of campus ministry says there are many great ways that churches and organizations can provide positive Jesus-centered influence particularly for this generation.

Listen to this podcast with leaders of your congregation.

The Rev. Dr. Steve Cheyney is university pastor at UNC-Charlotte and leads the Niner United ministry there. He also is on the faculty of the Honors College at Charlotte.
