Staycation Destinations for Summer 2023

It’s 47 miles long, carved 1,000 to 1,400 feet deep, and it’s found in north central Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, also known as the Pine Creek Gorge, is our first tour stop for our 2023 “Staycation Destinations” on Family Life. Each Friday for the summer, we take you to a unique destination that is fairly close to home and relatively inexpensive. Greg Gillispie will map out these attractions and adventures in varied areas of Pennsylvania and New York.

Colleen Hanson, who has four years experience at the executive director of Visit Potter-Tioga based in Wellsboro, guides us through the hiking and biking and kayaking in the region, the natural beauty, a summer mountain music concert series, and theater productions. The area is also famous as one of the best places on the continent — if not the whole planet! — for stargazing, as a “dark sky” park far from Earth-based light which distracts your view.

Side Trip suggestion:  New this summer, each of our “Staycation Destinations” podcast posts will also describe one additional tourist site in the Family Life listening area. It could be a quirky attraction, a new activity, or something else that locals and visitors may find curious and worth a stop.

This week’s Side Trip Suggestion: The 60 Canoes sculpture in Buffalo, New York. Artist Nancy Rubins piled 60 metal canoes with a few rowboats on a pole, calling her creation “Stainless Steel Aluminum Monochrome 1”. She has made similar large sculptures elsewhere in the country. This one is located outside the AKG Art Museum (which reopened this month after a major two-year renovation and expansion project).

School Choice Bill vetoed in PA – 07/06/23

School Choice Bill vetoed in PA – 07/06/23

After a tenuous debate and weeks of negotiation, the Pennsylvania legislature agreed to a budget bill which would allow “the money to follow the student”. State Representative Clint Owlett authored the “Life-Line Scholarship” program which would have given families school-choice options, including to move their student from a school which does not serve the student well.

Gov. Josh Shapiro announced this week that he would use his executive authority to strike that element out of the new law.

Family Life News aired an extended interview with Owlett to get more background, plus his reaction to these latest developments.

Special Feature – Supreme Court Rulings on Religious Freedom – Jeremy Samek – 07/05/23

Special Feature – Supreme Court Rulings on Religious Freedom – Jeremy Samek – 07/05/23

“Ramifications of Recent Supreme Court Rulings”

The U.S. Supreme Court majority announced major rulings in the past week, deciding cases related to religious freedoms, affirmative action, and the write-offs of some students’ college loans.

Family Life News aired an extended conversation to get beyond the quick headlines — and past the partisan “spin” — and gather analysis on some of these major rulings from the the final days of the Court’s current term. Our guest is Jeremy Samek of the Independence Law Center. He was active in the lawsuits brought by a Christian postal worker in Pennsylvania and a website designer who was sued for discrimination, pushing against First Amendment rights of freedom of religious expression.

Missions Pulse – Bible Translators – 07/03/23

Missions Pulse

A husband and wife couple serve as translation specialists with Pioneer Bible Translators. By integrating Bible translation and Scripture engagement, they provide enduring access to God’s Word for people in West Africa. There are very few followers of Jesus among their target people group. Having Scripture in their own language is an important step for them to know and follow Jesus. Our guests are excited to see more people experience life transformation through God’s Word. The Bible can become an excellent outreach as a literacy tool too.

In this interview you will hear about how much more translation work needs to be done, considering that there are currently 7,300 different languages spoken on this planet.  (Hint: many of the most widespread languages have multiple Scripture options; many thousands do not yet have a single version of the full Holy Bible.)

Missions Pulse is launching as a new News Features series from Family Life.
