Christians & Artificial Intelligence

Today on “Faith Under Fire”: We’ll hear more from James Spencer about the role Christians can play in the development of new technologies.

Author James Spencer says Artificial Intelligence may increase efficiency, but it can’t replace our God-given desire to work.

Spencer, president of the D.L. Moody Institute, says Christians need to put AI in its proper place, and we have the unique opportunity to do that from a Biblical perspective.

You also can listen to our previous conversation with James Spencer here.

“Faith Under Fire” airs most Thursdays on the radio (and online) during the Noon Report, and segments are included in other newscasts during the day. These conversations are also archived on FamilyLife.org/newspodcasts for you to hear, subscribe or download.

Real Answers – “Procrastination” – 06/07/23

Real Answers – “Procrastination” – 06/07/23

Procrastination … not just “getting around to it” … getting through it

The reasons we procrastinate are numerous, but Christian counselor Christopher Anderson says our self-doubt often keeps us from making forward progress.

Any time a person feels over-scheduled or over-stressed, it’s easy to get bogged down. The tasks might be boring or less important or unstructured. We also might need to develop a better system of rewarding or affirming yourself.

Anderson, a New-York-based Christian counselor, says we can push through our procrastination, by accomplishing one thing, rather than letting a decision-making process leave you spinning your wheels. Each item you can check off your list helps you to get ahead of future to-do lists.

Anderson also says, if you are procrastinating on “getting around to” Bible reading and personal devotional time, that could be why you feel out of balance or anxious. He offers advice — including perspectives from his own life — on how and when to make time with the Lord be fruitful and beneficial.

Real Answers” helps you tackle the tough topics facing today’s Christians and families. It is one of our Wednesday features heard on the air and online during the Family Life Noon Report. These conversations are always available for listening or downloading from FamilyLife.org/NewsPodcasts.

A popular Abortion Pill on trial

The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is considering a case regarding FDA approval of Mifepristone two decades ago.

Texas OB/GYN Dr. Ingrid Skop has provided expert testimony in trials involving Mifepristone, based on her medical research. On the June 1 Family Life Noon Report, Bob Price had an extended interview with Dr. Skop, about what she sees as dangers of the abortion-inducing drug, not only (obviously) to the fetus, but also for a significant number of the women who have taken the pill. There is question about how the FDA studied and reported on Mifepristone’s side effects, as well as how much of the national discussion misnames abortions as a women’s health issue.

Whichever way the appeals court ruling in New Orleans comes out, likely during June, the case is expected to return to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Your Child’s Addiction to Toxic Screens

Research supports what many parents already know: toxic screens are hurting their children’s mental health.

Melanie Hempe, a retired RN and founder of the not-for-profit ScreenStrong, works with families to eliminate childhood screen dependency.

Video games, social media, and pornography are the most problematic. “They structurally will change the brain and increase the dopamine in your kid’s brain,” Hempe says, “and this sets your child up for addiction now and in the future.”

They also displace time children need for developing social and life skills. Screens, and especially video games, will detach our kids from their family,” she adds. “So it’s the saddest, most lasting part of the story: the game becomes their family and you lose your kids, and that’s what a lot of families are struggling with today.”

Part of the solution is to limit the temptation. No child needs a smartphone, she asserts. It’s not a rite of passage. A laptop for homework and a talk-and-text phone for communication will cover their needs.

“You are not denying or taking away anything. You are giving them a much bigger life and the freedom to love childhood again. You get your kids back and they love you for loving them so much to choose this counter-cultural path. The bonus is that you are not setting them up for addiction down the road, either.”
