Therapists and mental health counselors can guide people through some significant challenges in life. Physicians and psychiatrists can also be of help, sometimes with recommendations on medications which can provide benefits for individuals with mental health challenges or illnesses.
On this edition of “Real Answers”, licensed Christian counselor Christopher Anderson offers his professional observations on how medicines and mental health can intertwine and provide a context where counseling can become even more effective. He cautions though that some people who stop taking prescribed medication without a doctor’s advice might see anxiety or depression recur.
Anderson also offers his advice for those Christians who lean against — or who are strongly opposed — to mental health medications. He offers his take on how use of these prescriptions is not contradictory to a faithful Christian lifestyle.
(Important note: All use of such medications are subject to the supervision of a prescribing medical doctor. Be sure to talk with your own personal physician or nurse practitioner regarding limits, recommendations, and appropriate care for you or your family member, especially geared for you unique situation.)
(Therapeutic or pastoral counseling can also be a productive aspect of a person’s process toward recovery or growth.)

“Hometown Heroes” on Family Life
Link Youth Mentorship is a ministry which pairs compassionate, involved adults with young people in the Rochester area.
The program is motivated by a Census statistic that 72% of young people in that city spend at least part of their growing-up years in a single-parent household. While the custodial parents do so much, Link’s vision is that “young men often don’t get the attention and instruction they need to get their best start in life.”
Gary Heydens is the program director there. In this conversation, he talks about the needs and the trends, then shares success stories of what changes are happening in the lives and families of those served through Link Youth Mentorship.

While Russian and Ukrainian fighters are on the front lines of what has become a 500-day war in Europe, Christian mission workers are on the “front lines” of helping those civilians caught up in the crossfire. It is not only the deaths and destruction of infrastructure directly related to weapons and bombs, this war created a huge flood disaster when a major dam was breached.
Mission Eurasia is among the ministries seeing to resolve human needs, restore communities, and renew hope. Coordinator Barry Gardner tells us about what is happening as Christians are at work in a war zone. Often, Mission Eurasia emphasizes support and empowerment for local congregations. Hear about the hundreds of thousands of people who are receiving practical help and spiritual witness, even from just one ministry group.
“Missions Pulse” with Abigail Hofland explores the heartbeat of missions through conversations with those at the center of Christ-centered service. Listen alternating Mondays during the Family Life Noon Report, and find our podcasts on FamilyLife.org.

Staycation Destinations for Summer 2023
Untold hundreds of battles littered the nation when the American Civil War decimated this nation. Yet one which happened July 1-3, 1863, has become etched in U.S. history, in part because of of the two-minute, 272-word address President Abraham Lincoln would deliver to commemorate the war dead at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
A new tourist site opened there this spring (April 2023) to not only commemorate the battle, but life in that part of southern Pennsylvania.
The Gettysburg Beyond the Battle Museum certainly looks at that battle, the war, and the Gettysburg Address. Yet, the Adams County Historical Society developed its expanded museum with an expanded role — to tell the story of the local area before, during, and after the 1860s.
Michaela Shaffer, our guest for this week’s Family Life “Staycation Destinations”, offers insights into the museums artifacts, displays and interactive experiences at Beyond the Battle. Find out about Native American cultures who lived in the area. Hear how the museum as recreated for visitors a full sensory experience of what it was like to be trapped in your farmhouse when a major battle breaks out all around you. Shaffer also provides a few stories about another president — in retirement Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower returned to the Gettysburg area to buy a local farm, decades after his military career included training and service in the area. This museum features a number of areas where it is OK to touch and hold history, so it has something of interest to all ages.
Gettysburg is in the south-central section of Pennsylvania.

This week’s Side Trip Suggestion:
What color is the light on top of a traffic signal? There is one in the Family Life listening area which defies the most common response.
The Tippery Hill traffic signal in Syracuse, New York is the only one in the world which is described as upside-down. The statue of a family looking at the sight might describe it that way, but the 1920s’ residents of the mostly-Irish neighborhood were fine with the Irish green above what was seen as the British red. City leaders eventually gave in, but the state insisted the colors be put in the traditional order. However, each time it was “fixed”, the traffic signal “somehow” stopped working. Once the green-on-top was allowed to stay, no further “troubles” were reported.
[New this summer, each of our “Staycation Destinations” podcast posts will also describe one additional tourist site in the Family Life listening area. It could be a quirky attraction, a new activity, or something else that you may discover is worth seeking out.]
