Special Feature – Dave Dravecky – 05/10/23

Dave Dravecky, a former Major League Baseball star, famously lost his pitching arm to cancer more than 30 years ago.

Nowadays, Dravecky uses his life story to inspire others throughout the country. He will be the keynote speaker at Clark’s Summit Pennsylvania May 19-20 for the “Man Up” men’s conference. His ministry is called “Endurance: with Jan and Dave Dravecky”.

In this extended Family Life conversation, Dravecky talks baseball history, the current game, cancer, depression — and how his Christian faith sustained him and his family through life’s ups and downs. The former pitcher’s story of what he’s learned can inspire people to find encouragement and hope, no matter what life throws at them.

Hometown Heroes – Craig Wheeland – 05/09/23

Watsontown, Pennsylvania’s Craig Wheeland has demonstrated the Gospel of Jesus Christ in small towns and large cities in Pennsylvania — plus many villages in many countries. His work encourages children to learn to read, so they can read the Scriptures and talk about faith with their parents. When he and a U.S. team go on a mission trip, his priority is to deepen connnections, knowing the people even more than doing projects.

Wheeland’s ministry goes by the name Aim4Christ, which stands for “Actions In Mission For Christ“. They are active in food programs in their local community of 2,300 in the West Branch Susquehanna River valley of central Pennsylvania.

In his conversation with Mark Webster, Wheeland also tells how his international evangelistic work put him a momentarily life-threatening situation, even as the Lord’s work multiplied.

Inside Out – Teaching Children about Marriage – 05/03/23

Inside Out – Teaching Children about Marriage – 05/03/23

Marriage is a signpost pointing to God’s unconditional love.

Marriage is so much more than compatible people with romantic feelings for each other, and we want children to know this. “Marriage is based on a promise. And it’s based on a promise because it’s trying to be a mirror to the love God has shown us in Jesus, which is covenantal love,” he says. “It’s promise-making love.”

To help parents and caregivers teach this, pastor and author Sam Allberry has written the picture book God’s Signpost: How Marriage Points Us to God’s Love. The story revolves around siblings Ethan and Lila, who learn about marriage as they celebrate their grandparents’ 50th anniversary.

“What we want a child to know about God’s love is that it is unconditional,” Allberry says in our Family Life conversation. “God loves us because of what He’s like. He doesn’t love us because of what we’re like. And so we can’t perform our way into it, and we can’t sin our way out of it. He loves us because it’s His nature to love.”

Which is a good thing, Allberry assures us, as even solid marriages don’t always point to God’s love. “Ultimately, our faith is not on whether we get this right, but on whether God Himself is able to love us in this way,” Allberry says. “And He so beautifully is.”
