It started small, with a simple chapel message to a smallish handful of students about love.
It grew to one of the biggest spiritual revivals in America in a generation.
As Asbury University in Kentucky makes plans to wind down the revival there, we wondered what it was like to be an established congregation, within walking distance of an event which made national news, as many experienced a powerful awareness of how God’s Spirit was moving. The pastor of the nearby Wilmore United Methodist congregation was at Asbury for the early days as a prayer counselor. That congregation, and others in the neighborhood, became overflow gathering places as people all ages converged on the “Asbury Awakening”.
Listen to Greg Gillispie’s conversation this week with the Rev. D. Merricks about his personal experiences, and how the university and the community can use this revival event as a springboard toward connections with a generation with a great spiritual hunger and curiosity.
