Special Feature – Gender Issues and Nashville’s Tragic News – 03/30/23

Special Feature – Gender Issues and Nashville’s Tragic News – 03/30/23

A timely Special Feature from Family Life.

In this week when transgenderism has filled our headlines due to an individual who shot and killed six at a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, we explore whether gender may have been an issue.

Garry Ingraham is founder of the Love and Truth Network. His ministry provides counseling and encouragement to individuals with heterosexual and same-sex sexual addictions, gender dysphoria, and similar issues. Ingraham is a native of New York State, who now serves in Glendale Arizona. In addition to reacting to the Nashville tragedy, he offers his perspective on wider cultural trends.

Ingraham and the Love and Truth Network says there is a higher position which Christians should have, rather than leaning to one side or the other of today’s transgender debates:

Most churches struggle to function well within the tension of two realities. Many tend to practice a permissive, affirming attitude toward sexual behavior; others take a harsh, legalistic approach that condemns people seen as undoubtably sinful.
But Jesus shows us a better way.

Their website offers resources for congregations and church leaders to foster a Biblical search for how to interact with others, away from hatred, suspicion and judgment.

Special Feature – CompassCare Attacked – Jim Harden – 03/23/23

One of the CompassCare facilities in western New York has been violently attacked — twice in nine months. The most recent incident was the spray painting of graffiti on a sign at their Buffalo clinic a week ago, on March 16. That location also was set ablaze by arsonists in June 2022. Surveillance video showed two individuals smashing windows and setting fires inside the building. Damage was estimated at $400,000. To date, no arrests have been made.

CompassCare officials have claimed solving the arson case is a low priority for local police and the FBI. Both agencies deny that, and the FBI has offered a reward for public tips which assist in their investigation. CompassCare’s leaders also say that state officials have been one-sided in denouncing violence and threats, depending the positions held by those who are being threatened.

Jim Harden, the CEO of CompassCare, gives us a closer, first-person account of these two Buffalo attacks, as well as the surrounding and overarching issues of violence directed at pro-life centers across the nation

Faith Under Fire – President Wayne Lewis – Black History – 02/23/23

Faith Under Fire – President Wayne Lewis – Black History – 02/23/23

February’s Black History Month gives additional emphasis to ponder the state of racial tensions in America. Yet, the president of a Christian university in New York says a study of American history points to a lot of progress, despite what he calls “the colorful lessons” we all have learned – or need to learn.  These lessons still can put into practice, as we speak our own stories, and listen attentively to others’ personal stories..

Houghton Univ's sixth presidentDoctor Wayne Lewis of Houghton University returns to Family Life to offer his perspectives on racism in America, plus the ways God has been at work – through, because of, and despite past and current problems.

President Lewis also offers a very personal perspective, remember his grandparents’ generation, and how he talks with his young daughter about African-American history and progress that has vastly improved race relations.

Special Feature – Being a Church near the Asbury Awakening – 02/21/23

Special Feature – Being a Church near the Asbury Awakening – 02/21/23

It started small, with a simple chapel message to a smallish handful of students about love.

It grew to one of the biggest spiritual revivals in America in a generation.

As Asbury University in Kentucky makes plans to wind down the revival there, we wondered what it was like to be an established congregation, within walking distance of an event which made national news, as many experienced a powerful awareness of how God’s Spirit was moving. The pastor of the nearby Wilmore United Methodist congregation was at Asbury for the early days as a prayer counselor. That congregation, and others in the neighborhood, became overflow gathering places as people all ages converged on the “Asbury Awakening”.Wilmore UMC

Listen to Greg Gillispie’s conversation this week with the Rev. D. Merricks about his personal experiences, and how the university and the community can use this revival event as a springboard toward connections with a generation with a great spiritual hunger and curiosity.

Feature – America’s Christian Leaders are Aging – 02/15/23

Feature – America’s Christian Leaders are Aging – 02/15/23

The current generation of America’s Christian leaders are aging — and now is the time to prepare for the upcoming (and necessary) transition to those who will follow.

That is the advice from Warren Smith, president of MinistryWatch.com. His ministry surveyed the 1,000 largest Christian organizations in the nation about leadership issues. Smith tells Family Life that many ministries have addressed how to continue the work after a popular leader retires or steps down, but more organizations need to prayerfully think through what their future holds.

Smith talks about how to communicate with mid-level personnel and call up the gifts of young candidates. Boards of directors of ministries (of all sizes) should develop succession plans, even if current leaders seem likely to stay in their positions for a decade or more. This conversation includes recommendations for key aspects to include in those succession plans.

Special Feature – Fentanyl & Opioids – Dr. David Streem – 02/13/23

Special Feature – Fentanyl & Opioids – Dr. David Streem – 02/13/23

The fentanyl crisis.

A shocking statistic: Enough fentanyl was seized by law enforcement in 2022 to kill every American, of every age.

That is 50 million pills, plus 10 thousand pounds of Fentanyl powder. The DEA says that is over 379 million potentially deadly doses.

And that is only what law enforcement was able to confiscate.

The hundreds of thousands of deaths from the synthetic and illegal Fentanyl, plus hundreds of thousands more who became addicted to other (legal) opioid painkillers, this crisis calls out for a cure.

David Streem is medical director for Cleveland Clinic’s alcohol and drug treatment center. He tells Family Life, in addition to the toll this epidemic has on victims, families, and law enforcement, the opioid crisis takes a toll on the medical community.

Our Super Bowl week focus continues as we preview the campaign behind two Super Bowl TV ads which will invite nearly hundred million viewers to consider who Jesus is.

“He Gets Us” offers subtle messages about how Jesus connects with people in their everyday lives. With these TV spots, social media presence, and big-city billboards, “He Gets Us” is especially aimed toward the one-quarter of Americas who are not involved in faith or have chosen to drop away because of poor treatment by churches.

Spokesperson Jordan Carson talks about how “He Gets Us” got started in early 2022, why sports sponsorship helps them reach out to their target audience, and how local congregations and Christian groups can be available to follow up with seekers who respond.

Special Feature – Damar Hamlin, America, the Power of Public Prayer – 02/07/23

Special Feature – Damar Hamlin, America, the Power of Public Prayer – 02/07/23

Summit MinistriesFootball kicks off renewed public prayer

Dr. Jeff Myers, founder of Summit Ministries returns to Family Life to discuss Summit’s recent public poll that proved two out of three Americans believe public prayer has value and is effective. The poll was triggered by the outpouring of prayer and faith conversations when Buffalo Bills defender Damar Hamlin had a nationally-broadcast cardiac arrest in early January.

Now this week, Myers tells us how an awareness that people of faith are in a large majority should given Christians the confidence and boldness to speak about and live out their faith, unintimidated by the 5-8% of people who want to shut down truth.

More about Summit Ministries’ outreach to the younger generation — and details about this helpful survey — can be found here.
